Ben subtext:
Every line was perfectly arranged.
Kurt singing that “you’ll never be alone; you’ve got a friend in me.” Then Finchel back it up “you’ve got a friend in me.” It’s how they’re realizing that, though their dreams may not work out, they’re in this all together. Which is basically what I felt like their Breadstix scene established.
Rachel singing about not being wanted anywhere; Kurt has always had those feelings, and now Finn also has those feelings. For Kurt, it’s the fact that he doesn’t really fit any of the role “types,” and for Finn, it’s the fact that he doesn’t know his calling. Rachel’s the only one sure of her place, really.
Then Finchel singing the “it used to be I and me. Now it’s us. Now it’s we.” While it also has nice Kurfichel subtext, it basically re-states the song. I think they chose Finchel to sing this, though, because this is right before Rachel arrives to her decision on if she’ll agree to marry Finn.
And Finn singing how he doesn’t care if some people don’t want “you;” that describes his journey with both Rachel and Kurt. They were both perceived to be uncool, and they said he shouldn’t be friends with them, but he did because he knew, no matter what they said, they were special.
I know it’s sung to Blaine, and he’s included in the group of friends supporting one another, but they had Kurfichel all sing it together for a reason. They’re the ones graduating together. Blaine still has a year of school left.
In sum, it’s perfect, and I JUST WANT TO KISS YOU ALL.
